An exhibition of theatre posters from York International Shakespeare Festival 2024
Previously exhibited at York Explore in April 2024, as part of the York Shakespeare Festival, celebrating the tradition and importance of theatre posters from Poland and other Eastern European countries during the Communist rule.
While all productions had artist designed posters, new productions of Shakespeare were eagerly awaited, and the plays were seen as dangerous and subversive.
As well as promoting the productions, the posters were themselves works of art, often a vehicle for the artist and the company to reinforce the focus of their work and sometimes to conceal a political and social message.
These posters are part of the Birmingham Shakespeare Memorial Library's collection which has more than 100,000 items from 450 years ago in 95 languages. There is ongoing investigation into the collection, including the origins of these posters and the creators of them.
